In his long essay "Defensa de la carta misiva y de la correspondencia epistolar" (El defensor, 1948), Pedro Salinas advocated the virtues of letter-writing in terms than echo the words of his close friend, Jorge Guillén. The correspondence between them shows to what extent they shared values and opinions about life and literature; it also throws light on the importance that the two poets assigned to the complementary acts of reading and writing. Guillén in particular often used the verb escribir and occasionally variants as playful as hacer coplas to denote an activity that was generated, he claimed in a memorable phrase, "por querencia ineludible".
